Jobs in commercial kitchen can involve working in a large hotel, a small restaurant or in a company’s staff canteen. At entry-level for this basic job, opportunities exist to make a long-term career in an aspect of the catering industry. Jobs in commercial kitchens involve hard work and the ability to carry out instructions to the letter. The hours are varied and often worked as shifts, especially in the larger establishments, with stress management at busy time a useful skill.
Initially, daily tasks may be menial, involving washing up, cleaning and suchlike, but given the numerous opportunities in the culinary field, employees can take advantage of training to improve their career prospects. No specific educational qualifications are required but courses can be taken in various skills. One useful qualification would be a recognised health and safety food credential such as the City and Guilds 744 certificate. Starter salaries are based around the government minimum wage structure, but can rise to figures in excess of £20,000 a year over a period of time.
