Library Assistant

A library assistant performs an important function in the smooth running and usefulness of libraries at schools, colleges and universities in the UK. An efficient job holder is able to assist the head librarian in offering resource filing and retrieval as well as relevant advice to pupils and teaching staff.
Duties performed by library assistants vary from facility to facility but usually include putting books and other media away, locating resources, updating and maintaining library databases, and running book clubs.
While there are no specific academic requirements for prospective applicants in the UK, a recent library and information science graduate may be given preference. Successful applicants should be able to employ logical thought processes, filing and organisational skills and have an interest in reading and in the performance of their duties.
Vacancies are mainly at university and college libraries in the UK’s big cities. Salaries begin at about £12,000 a year and rise to around £16,000 for those with previous experience. Some schools also take on part-time employees who are usually remunerated on an hourly basis, with starting rates of £6.50.

  • Library assistant - formal training vs experience Tracy

Moving from a small village in the south west where I worked as a library assistant to Birmingham. I’m told that things are different in bigger cities like Birmingham. I have a Level 2 GCSE, and I’m told that to continue working in a library in Birmingham I’m going to need specific training. Do 15yrs experience don’t count?

    • Riley:

Qualifications in information and library services are a plus as far as I know. Your best bet is to go straight to the source and see what they request.

    • Tracy:

Thanks Riley, will do. I hope my experience counts, otherwise i’d find it very frustrating and definitely very unfair.

    • Susan:

I have no specific training and 20yrs experience and i haven’t been told that i have to take any further training. I’d do it if they asked, i would actually love it :-) I love the job, though the wages could be a bit better.
