Being ignored
In the 10 months I have been looking for a job any hours, temp or perm the hardest thing I find to understand is being totally ignored. I know companies/agencies whatever get a lot of applicants and perhaps can't reply to everyone however the vast majority of jobs I apply for is work I have done for the last 15 years the majority working for the government.
One agency rang me about 09:15 to check my availability re a vacancy I put in for only never to hear from them again even after a query as to what was happening then another two asking for feedback as I had the right experience, and was the age the employer was looking for besides not being very professional it is downside rude and ignorance....how did they get their job !!!
I have put in for hundreds of jobs with employers and agencies what I find strange is I never get a reply you can count on one hand the unsuccessful emails I have had. Even when some agency contacts me they don't get back to you.As for equal opportunity employers I feel they discriminate more than firms that don't state they are equal ops.
I am not exaggerating I never get any response.
A world famous supermarket I applied for part time checkouts, (and I trained at M&S )didn't send me the evaluation questionnaire then rejected me because I hadn't filled it in and there is no way to contact them to let them know.
I am practically on the verge of selling my soul to the devil......but really is it worth itEileen Willey- I thoroughly agree with you Eileen, at least if it's a No then I can move on happily. I am 59 now and I am beginning to think my age is against me now.....although it shouldn't be apparently
-
Yes I am having the same problem, it is soul destroying, not getting a reply, or interview when you have had many years experience. I really do feel age is a problem too, they can tell from your CV how old you are, and let's face it, they will go for younger most of the time.
-
I am having the same problem too Jillie. I just want some part time work in Retail, but I cannot believe how difficult it has been. I check my job alerts every day and have put my cv into so many stores but they don't seem to acknowledge me. My confidence is going downhill rapidly
-
Wendy I am sorry to learn that you are not having the success you seek. .May I ask what is your current main method of applying for jobs eg.-do you use a CV? If so, how many pages is it? I don't know if it helps but last week I saw LIDLs in Dagenham, ssex were recruiting for staff. As I recall LIDLS wanted applications in the form of a CV.
-
Hi John,
Thank you for your email.
I live in Crawley, West Sussex so I'm afraid Dagenham is abit far for me.
I apply for jobs with my CV and a cover letter, so they get to know my personality but I think if these companies called you in for an interview they would get a much better idea of the person who is applying for the job. I still think the old fashion way is best as the cv style seems rather unpersonal.

It is total ignorance to ignore your application. Just think yourself lucky that they did not respond, would you really want to work for an illmannered employer. It would be great if we could share potentially bad employers.
- I agree with you workshared, sounds a really good idea
- I know the feeling, I'm 61+, For the past 2.1/2 years I've been trying too, To know advail!, The only job's I've had, is what the Job club, have sent me on, Where You do not get paid! When you look on the net, All these supposed to be! I've Joined every job Agence, Strange when they send you jobs, Saying they're local, I go into them, Like Lidl, There not, some 40 to 70 miles away, They seem to just send them willy nilly, I recon I get about: 150 job a day sent to me! Like you say, You feel like selling your soul to the devil, Do not do it!!, The people who's in the position, telling us to apply for these job's, aren't real! Believe me, we are put on the scrap heap, they're playing Mine Games1 DO NOT DO ANYTHING FOOLISH! We are all in the same boat!!

I have applied for over 100 jobs part time mainly and have only had 2 interviews which I did not get. I think we are ignored especially
when you want school hours. I am in work at moment but it's not good for various
reasons
and company selling up so I want to go into
support work within a charity field but shift
work and lack of experience in that field is
very hard. I have decided to look into
voluntary work to gain experience only to be told if I needed support from benefits while I
get back on my feet I would have to be
available for what the job centre wanted me
to do. - I hafe read the comments and totally agree that there are mahy companies that never answer an application at all,I also think that many are ageist ! They read the word O'level or CSE and realise the applicant is possibly over 50 , shock horror, these people are still alive and looking for jobs . I wish some companies would not write us off so easily We Are Still With It you know! ! And are capable at keeping up with fast paced 2017 life

- Night Porter: Kept me posted of everything going The William Cecil - Stamford
- Customer Service Assistant : I was able to see what vacancies were available. Although the job advertised was for night work, at the interview I was told, due to my past work experience I would be more suitable for a Customer Service Assistant role instead and was offered a different job which they were just about to advertise. I have no past customer service experience in Retail as I was previously working in an office environment but still dealing with customers. Therefore I feel my skill were transferrable to the Retail industry. I am now looking forward to working for Sainsbury's. Sainsbury's - Essex
