  I intended to apply for plumber jobs, but recently somebody told me that apprenticeships are no longer a way in. Is that so? Please tell me it's not!

    No, this is not accurate. Lately there are more people who've trained specifically for the job than used to be the case before, but apprenticeships are still an option. I hope you're lucky, because what is true is that there are more people in the market already ahead of you if you have no training... this IS a fact.
